Six years in the Third Space
In 2020 Third Space celebrates its 6th anniversary with an interdisciplinary program revolving around the complex theme of COLLABORATION.
Our program consists of a variety of projects realized together with artists, cultural workers, writers, scholars, and educators, not forgetting the audience and other artist-run and non-commercial organizers. Do not miss the following events in our calendar — they will take on various forms, including exhibitions, performances, workshops, and discussions. While inhabiting and negotiating the framework of collaboration, some approaches also work through specific concepts and contexts such as lines/borders, community, host/guest, theory/action, time/space, sound/silence, encounter/dis-encounter, and failure.
In addition to the anniversary program, our 6th year will result in a publication first released online and later as a printed edition. This publication will tackle the past, the present, and the future of Third Space exploring but questions on collaboration, also on what is (an artist-run) space. Who gets to access and use the space? What gets to be presented? How can we invent new, better ways of collaborating, curating, thinking, and doing? What does space have to do with concepts like distance/proximity; intimacy, encounter, and (re)presentation?
The publication, constellated together with our collaborators, will feature written (in English) and visual, possibly even auditory contributions.
And our amazing collaborators are:
Camille Auer I Yvonne Billimore I Adrián Balseca I Marten Esko (EKKM) I Antye Greie-Ripatti I Minna Hint & Killu Sukmit (Kraam Art Space) I Feminist Culture House I Ali Akbar Mehta (Museum of Impossible Forms) I Iida Nissinen, Tuisku Lehto, Laura Rämö & Oona Heinänen (QUERQ community) I Abdullah Qureishi I Tina Madsen I Vidha Saumya I Diana Soria Hernández I Milja-Maaria Terho & Juulia Terho I Marko Timlin

About Third Space collective
Third Space is a cross-border artist collective and a long-term cultural project that seeks to transcend invisible lines separating us. Our collective identity and goals are shaped by the members’ diverse geopolitical views and backgrounds. Our aim is to observe both from the ‘outside in’ and ‘inside out’ so as to create new ways of understanding what marginal and central mean in Finnish society, and how to bridge them through dialogue. In practice, we want to rethink and redefine border-discussing categorization and translate theories into actions. As the art field becomes increasingly capitalized and art practices highly individualized, we promote collaborative practices over competitive ones. Third Space Collective emerged as a response to the lack of inclusivity and diversity in the Helsinki art scene. Inclusivity is not a fixed concept but a changing one. Our role is to identify its different forms; respond to them and create them.
Third Space is an incubator for generating ideas, a space for encounters, a space for people, art and its production. It has become an influential platform and meeting point that brings together diverse cultural and artistic practices. Since 2014, Third Space has provided self-funded, free-of-charge space that welcomes multidisciplinary projects and open discussions on sociopolitical issues and contexts. Since then we have collaborated with over 528 individuals: artists, art educators, curators and cultural workers, hosting over 223 events.
The 2020 anniversary program celebrates our commitment to respond to the demand for inclusivity in the local art scene.
