Aurinkokivi (La Piedra del Sol) opens a new series of audible drawings. Through a self-made electronic circuit that simultaneously converts graphite traces into sound, a drawing is transformed into an audible piece which is experienced by the sense of hearing and the sense of sight. Drawing is normally seen as the outcome of a private communication process between the mind and the hand’s muscles, and remains as an intimate act between the artist and her practice. But what if that process, apart from being perceived by the sense of sight, is also captured by the sense of hearing? What does it mean to experience sound through the eyes and drawings through the ears?
With Aurinkokivi (La Piedra del Sol), Ana Gutieszca presents a reinterpretation of the Aztec calendar with embedded electronic components on paper. It portrays symbols that, according to this ancient culture, can lead humanity through the secret path of self-realization. If we humans were more concerned about how to live in harmony with each other and within oneself, the world would be a better place where the sun shines for all. Therefore, this audible drawing sings out a wakeup call to reflect on our spiritual and mundane life.
Ana Gutieszca is a visual and sound artist born in the dry lands of the Coahuila desert. Drawing is the core of her work. By addressing the question of the animal and its ambivalent presence through symbolic thinking, she sculpts the unfathomable boundaries of drawing throughout the creation of analog and digital instruments, the sonification of graphite and its deconstruction into performance art. She is a founder member of Third Space and curator of Sound Room project.
Project kindly supported by TAIKE and PECDA Coahuila, Mexico.
