600.000+ “DISPOSABLE” LIVES

On October 8th of 2021 Brazil reached the absurd number of 600.000 deaths caused by Covid-19. These lives are not disposable. These lives have names and surnames. 600.000+ “DISPOSABLE” LIVES is an installation in memory of the ones that went away because of the neglect of the Brazilian government during the pandemic. Danilo started to collect disposable masks last June mostly in pavements and trash around Helsinki. They were disinfected to be reused. According to THL, the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare, each “disposable” mask can be reused up to 10 times. At the same time as demonstrations in Brazil evoking the President to leave – “Bolsonaro Out” –, Danilo and volunteers made a performance in Finland. They wrote around 2.000 names of deceased people in three events; two of them in front of the Brazilian Embassy in Helsinki. The names were collected by the Unnumbered Memorial project (inumeraveis.com.br). Our deceased are alive in our memory. Danilo Canguçu (Salvador, Brazil) Artivist and photographer. Studied Direction for Theater at Universidade Federal da Bahia and Photography at Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano. Collaborated with the Festival Iberoamericano de Teatro de Bogotá (2012-2016) with translations, subtitles and as an artist. Worked as a photographer for Semana magazine in Bogotá (2017). Was part of Complexo Sul – International Exchange Platform for performing artists (2018). Between 2019 and 2020, was part of Cinemaissí – Latin American Film Festival, where he created the project Doc Archive.
