Within gay culture, darkrooms are highly sexual spaces that are exclusively used for cruising and anonymous sex. It is a labyrinth of men, where you move through the maze, feeling different bodies. Performing. Grinding. Submiting. To this end, through thoughts, conversations and a reflective process, the presented body of paintings and video/audio sculptures explore an explicit and uncomfortable parallel between child abuse and consensual sex. Abdullah Qureshi is an artist, educator and cultural producer. Within his practice, he is interested in using painting to address personal histories, trauma and childhood. More broadly, through his research, he expands ideas of queerness, sexuality and masculinity. Qureshi’s work has been exhibited internationally and he has held numerous positions at cultural and educational institutions including British Council and the National College of Arts, Lahore. In 2017, Qureshi received the Art and International Cooperation fellowship at Zurich University of the Arts, and is currently a Doctoral Candidate at Aalto University, Helsinki and Research Fellow at Center for Arts, Design, and Social Research, Boston. www.abdullahqureshi.net |
