This exhibition shows the video art research by Mariam Haji that reflects the transforming Arab identity within Europe with the metaphor of Humus. In this video the base ingredients in hummus are mixed with the national foods of European nations like Berries, Nettles and Salmiakki. These interviews take place in intimate spaces, public out door spaces and social indoor spaces amongst various identities.
The video will be displayed on the Third Space window, where it can be seen every day from 4 pm to 8 pm.
There is no opening, but a finissage will be held on the 26th of July, where the artist will perform her research and hummus will be served.
Mariam Haji was born in the Kingdom of Bahrain. She specializes in drawing and performance. She represented the Kingdom of Bahrain in the 55th Venice Biennale 2013, and was the winner of Bahrain's 38th National Fine Art Competition for her “Muse” series.
Her works are consistently metaphorical and parable in nature. She prefers poetic visual explorations as an action of Art, than Art itself. Most of her works are feminist in nature and question traditional Bahraini values that contradict modernisation on female lives.
