The Burning & The Romance

"I have collected the incenses from different parts of the world and they all have their special characters and forms. They look and smell different, but once I burn them all together and the smells get mixed... can our noses smell the difference?" The Burning & The Romance is an epilogue to an exhibition and research project titled "Chow Yik and Her Things". The first part of the exhibition, realised in spring 2014, took everyday objects and collecting under examination in order to resolve the artist's attachment towards her things. Every object in the exhibition was significant with a sealed meaning, and bit by bit it unravelled a story about the difficulty of letting go. As a resolution to the previous exhibition The Burning & The Romance is a scented installation which, instead of contemplating each object as a singular entity, undertakes the task of decomposition in order to put things behind. It is an attempt to let things pass, melt into one and to diffuse into air. Chow Yik is a visual artist, currently based in Helsinki, Finland. She is a memory keeper and a collector, whose work revolves around the thematics of belonging, presence and recollection.
