The Business of Art in the Arabian Gulf
Artist talk by Mariam Haji
24.06.2014
The presentation will discuss the region's culturally driven motives for visual expression and the artistic processes amongst artists. The talk includes examples from various immerged artists with an element of critical discourse on the hyper economically driven Art Market within the Gulf.
Mariam Haji (b.1985, Bahrain) has studied art both in Dundee, Scotland and Melbourne, Australia and is now working in Bahrain. In 2012 she was the first prize winner of Bahrain's 38th National Fine Art award. In 2013 she represented Bahrain alongside Waheeda Malallah and Camille Zakharia at the Venice Biennal.
Her works question issues of mortality, religion, the female, the abject and gender. In her current practice, these themes are further explored in the context of generational gaps and how sudden changes in the Gulf are transforming Bahraini culture. She hopes to deepen the questioning process within herself and provide an opportunity for new perspectives in the Gulf region.
