“Thirst Trap” is a text based performance investigating lust, power, love and seduction. It’s a story that takes the audience on an intense and intimate journey to blurred visions. In the performance we encounter a character leading us with a monologue to an ecstatic rhythm of information. It addresses you and me but never quite knowing who and what is being discussed. A sense of urgency contradicted with ridicule hovers in the air as the protagonist delivers their message with such importance. Speech is distorted, it’s difficult to articulate , focus on the mouth but it’s hard to read in.
Lines between our online - offline lives are continuing to be blurred and fragmented, manifesting in such characters, lacking subtlety with little, even zero concern for sentient human dignity. Are these characters impersonal prototypes of mass media, or masters of escapism? What happens when these characters are at large? Is nostalgia a valid state of mind? Stuck in the past with no grasp of the now and the future. Watching ideas, fantasies and bodies decay, through impatience. To think and assume, there is always somewhere better to be, ultimately fearing of missing out.
“Thirst Trap” aims to encapsulate the complexity of the multilayered characters that LARP and interacts within different social platforms; written, spoken and performed. It is depicting a lust for power, both political and sexual. The performance is a more personal take on social games, and speculates on how seduction and flirt, are used as tools for manipulation in different contexts. Where do lines between believes and conspiracies lie?
Does good storytelling justifies actions?
The work was created with support by Stoom Den Haag and L’Oeil de Poisson Residency. Adaptation is supported by TAIKE - Arts Promotion Center Finland.

Hanna Ijäs (1993, FIN) is a visual artist and a performer currently based in Helsinki. In her recent work Ijäs is trying to make sense of collective needs and desires for power, control, love and (mis)communication through performed games and texts. Her performances tell stories where situations, conversations or even singular words are re-framed and re-enacted in search for truths. In times where technology moulds the forms of interactions, Ijäs aims to grasp ways of communication and methods of understanding through performance and writing. Her artistic practice is a tool to reveal, discover and frame the value systems, power structures and conditions of humans at work. Production and productivity, conditioning and conformity in social behaviour in a given framework are recurring questions within her work.
