The screenings will be held at Third Space in Helsinki, Restaurant 931 & Arthouse Cinema Niagara in Tampere and Titanik gallery in Turku. All events have free entrance. From January 2017 the works are presented worldwide in solo exhibitions in Videokanava Online Gallery, www.videokanava.com Participating Artists: Reetta Elviira Hietaranta, Kalle Hamm & Dzamil Kamanger, Juhani Koivumäki, Juuso Kuivila, Arja Kärkkäinen, Anna-Mari Nousiainen, Sara Pathirane, Leena Pukki & Elena Leontiva, Anu Raatikainen, Kati Roover, Simo Saarikoski, Shubhangi Singh “What does it mean when we talk about “boundaries” today? The theme “Borders” refers to either physical territorial boundary such as geographical landmarks or metaphysical symbolic and social boundaries which individuals and groups create for themselves or others in order to survive the condition. While communication and knowledge, migration and prompt changes in global economy have all changed the perception of borders and boundaries, the instability of these concepts directly affects the definition of personal identity and extend into the personal, psychological and mental sphere. |
This year with the theme “Borders” Videokanava encourages media artists to rethink and reconsider the notion of personal or global boundaries, where the concepts such as geographical borders, the nation and its borders strongly exist and there is a return to new forms of nationalism. But certainly the ones who react to these concepts they create a new way of life and shape their new identity.
The festival will focus on the concept of “Borders” not just in the physical term but also between man’s body and mind in relation to the other, to the community or to the world. The question “how people live the borders while their lives, attitudes and behavior are shaped by them or how they break them” is essential to this theme. The festival aims to encourage media artists to discover the interpretations of borders between visible and invisible in the society. Artists are invited to present their video works on the theme reflecting different approaches and ways of perceiving."

Videokanava Online Gallery presents videos from emerging artists and filmmakers. The organisation was founded in Finland in 2014 and formed by a group of Tampere based contemporary artists. Every year a different curator selects video works for a themed exhibition from videos submitted. Every month Videokanava highlights a few of the curated works by presenting them at the artist's solo exhibition in the online gallery. In addition, the live screenings are held in art galleries and other interesting spaces in Finland and abroad.
